During this year’s Researcher’s Night on September 26th, visitors at BME had the chance to step into the fascinating world of quantum communication. The evening began with a fast-track introduction to quantum technologies, explaining what a qubit is and how it underpins the future of secure communication. Participants then saw a quantum random number generator in action—a unique device that produces truly random bits, essential for next-generation cryptography—while also learning about the practical hurdles researchers face when building such systems. The programme concluded with a demonstration of entanglement through a quantum key distribution setup, showcasing both the beauty and complexity of sharing encryption keys via free-space channels, where even keeping two parties perfectly synchronised poses a challenge.
