Public demonstration of the achievements of PRISM, Malta’s QCI project

2024.03.12. /Posted byPapp Bianka

The Malta NatQCI (PRISM) has organised a webinar on the 6th of March to kick off a collaboration with a set of other National QCIs. QCIHungary has also been invited to participate in this online event.

Malta achieved a significant national milestone with the activation of the PRISM quantum communication network, publicly operating for the first time in front of an audience at the end of January 2024. Merqury Cybersecurity Limited, the technical lead for the PRISM project, conducted the demonstration at the University of Malta with support from six other consortium members. PRISM is part of the EuroQCI network, alongside various other European initiatives, including QCIHungary.

The public demonstration, hosted at the University of Malta’s Faculty of ICT, included a connection to the University’s Department of Physics. This marked the inaugural public display of innovative quantum encryption technology in Malta, symbolizing a noteworthy achievement in establishing a robust nationwide quantum communication network, promising enhanced cybersecurity for the future.

This advancement is a crucial element of the PRISM project, which aims to implement quantum-secured communication links over standard telecommunications networks nationwide – a pioneering initiative in the EU to strengthen data security against current and future cyber threats. The demonstration unveiled the initial phase of a broader network that will be deployed across the Maltese islands in the coming months.

A video showcasing the successful event has been published on YouTube: https://youtu.be/rNXaP1o0Axk?si=gLqongqARh805xi4
