Scientific events during the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

2025 has been chosen as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) because it marks the 100th anniversary of the initial development of quantum mechanics.

By declaring 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the United Nations aims to stimulate global interest, foster international collaboration, and accelerate progress in this transformative field.

Several related events are organised throughout the year, keep an eye on these outstanding opportunities:

  • Official IYQ opening ceremony: February 4-5, 2025, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. This two-day event will include inspiring keynote addresses, engaging panel discussions, cultural performances an exhibition showcasing quantum science breakthroughs and applications (running from February 3-7)
  • Major quantum-focused conferences scheduled throughout 2025:
    • International Quantum Forum (January 30-31 in Munich, Germany)
    • Commercialising Quantum Global 2025 (May 13-14 in London)
    • QUANTUMatter2025 International Conference & Expo (May 20-23 in Grenoble, France)
    • World of QUANTUM 2025 (June 24-27 in Munich, Germany)
  • Scientific Workshops and Symposiums
    • Workshop on Quantum Satellite Networks (March 6-7 in Vienna, Austria)
    • Mallorca Topological Quantum Matter (MTQM) (May 6-9 in Palma, Spain)
    • Helgoland Workshop (June 9-14) featuring leading quantum physicists and Nobel Prize winners
  • Educational Initiatives
    • Imperial College London’s year-long program of demos, talks, and experiences
  • Public Engagement Activities
    • World Quantum Day celebrations “Everyday in 2025”, not just on April 14th
    • Community events led by various scientific societies and organizations
    • Public celebration at the Royal Institution in London. featuring prominent physicist, author and broadcaster Jim Al-Khalili (November 7 in London)
  • Industry and Innovation Showcases
    • Quantum projects from Europe’s Quantum Flagship initiative will showcase their results throughout the year
    • Consumer Electronics Convention in Las Vegas (January 9) featuring quantum-related presentations (past event)
  • Academic and Research Initiatives
    • Special quantum-themed issues and articles in scientific journals
    • Focus on bringing quantum STEM education and research opportunities to developing countries.
